Application logs and traces are useful only when the problem is visible from the application. Once latency, packet loss, syscall pressure, or scheduler behavior becomes part of the story, app-level telemetry stops being enough.
That is where eBPF becomes valuable. It lets engineers inspect kernel-adjacent behavior without treating every investigation like a custom kernel-module project.
That is not something normal application logging can show you. It inspects behavior below the application boundary.
Why This Matters in Production
Many hard incidents sit in the gap between "the app looks fine" and "the node is unhealthy." eBPF helps close that gap:
slow syscalls
unexpected network retries
queueing in the kernel
suspicious process behavior
It does not replace metrics, logs, or tracing. It extends the layers you can observe when those tools stop explaining the problem.
The Trade-Off
eBPF still requires judgment. Low-level telemetry is powerful, but it can also become noisy or misleading if the team does not understand the system underneath. The goal is not to collect more kernel events for their own sake. The goal is to answer concrete operational questions faster.
