SQLite gets underestimated because people associate it with prototypes and local tools.
That is a mistake.
It is a serious database with a strong reliability story and an extremely simple operational model.
The key is understanding what kind of workload it is good at.
Why SQLite Feels Fast
The obvious advantage is locality.
There is no separate database server, no network hop, and no connection pool between the application and the data file. For read-heavy local workloads, that simplicity can be very effective.
Where It Fits Well
SQLite is often a strong option for:
- embedded applications
- edge or single-node deployments
- internal tools
- read-heavy workloads with modest write concurrency
That is a meaningful set of systems.
Where It Does Not Fit as Well
You should be more cautious when you need:
- high write concurrency from many processes
- multi-node write coordination
- complex operational replication needs out of the box
- heavy analytical workloads across many app nodes
This is where PostgreSQL or another client-server database is usually a better fit.
WAL Mode Matters
If you use SQLite in production, understand Write-Ahead Logging:
- it improves concurrency behavior
- it allows readers and writers to coexist better
- it changes how the database file is managed operationally
That is one reason SQLite performs much better in real systems than many engineers assume.
The Honest Summary
SQLite is not a toy.
PostgreSQL is not overkill.
The right choice depends on whether your system benefits more from:
- local simplicity and low operational overhead
or
- client-server concurrency and richer database infrastructure
That is the actual decision.
